About Camber

Backed by the Walland Marsh, Camber has one of the finest stretches of pure sand and sand dunes found along the East Sussex coast. The dunes are mostly man made, the forestry commission planted grass to stop shifting sands of years, caused by the treacherous winds which easily ravage this corner of the coast. In recent years wind breaks have been grown and the area has developed into a major holiday resort with much to interest visitors including an amazing wealth of wildlife flourishing in the dunes.

Centuries ago Camber was known as the haunt of smugglers, contraband was landed on the beach and at Jew's Gut on the southern tip of the village. In 1826 a fierce battle took place here between the Excise men and the Aldington's, a gang of smugglers. A number of men were injured, they where treated by a local Doctor from Pear Tree House, Brookland.

More recently, in the days of World War II, the nearby town of Lydd was evacuated in order for it to be used as a testing ground for the weapons of war.

These days, Camber offers families a traditional sea-side holiday. There is a wide choice of holiday accommodation on offer, and sands and sea are perfectly safe for bathing. Across the estuary of the River Rother you can see the picturesque ruins of 16th century Camber Castle.
