Spitfire at the East Park Veterans weekend. Every year at the end of July East Park in Hull is taken over by 're-enactors' and all sorts of other historical interest. This year they had secured this Spitfire as one of the major attractions. Image cannot be loaded

They had some birds of prey at the park this year with a number of birds of which this 'hawk' was just one. They did tell me which model it was but i didn't write it down. But I'm sure one of you 'eagle-eyed' bird people will set my mind at rest. They were offering ... hold a bird for £1 or hold a bird and get a A4 photo (within minutes) for £5. And they seemed to be doing a steady trade. Image cannot be loaded

Monument Bridge, Hull

Beverley Gate gave access to the town of Hull through its walled defenses. The wall was built in the fourteenth century by Edward II who was granted permission to build a defensive stone wall around the town. It was rebuilt using brick between 1330 and 1410.
In 1642 King Charles I traveled from York to Hull to seize the city for its considerable arms that had been left after the Scottish War.
Sir John Hotham ordered the gates to be closed refusing the King entry to the town - an act that is thought to have triggered the English Civil War. Beverley Gate was demolished in 1776 to make way for the development of Queens Dock. (Now Queens Gardens)
The gate was rediscovered during an excavation in the 80s, and also uncovered were the foundations of Monument Bridge, which went over the waterway connecting Princes Dock and Queens Dock (Now Queens Gardens.)
The excavation site is a popular meeting place for skaters, goths and emo kids. Image cannot be loaded
Millers wife

This wonderful old character was trying to educate children, and adults, about the different types of grains we use. Wheat, Barley, Oats etc, but was having a hard time. No one knows these days.....sad??? Haven't a clue as to her age but was incredibly spritely and agile Image cannot be loaded
Hull Show 2012
© Dave John (view gallery)
The Hull Show used to be a 2 day country type show many years ago with countless trade and side shows, farm animal classes, domestic pet competitions and show jumping with ALL the big names of the time. It was resurrected a few years ago and is now a basically a show jumping show, with a few expensive burger bars and an expensive beer 'trailer' taking the place of the good old 'beer tent', but still an enjoyable few hours in glorious sun Image cannot be loaded

Woodpecker taking an easy meal in my back garden 23-12-12. Don't often get him in the garden. Not the best of quality as the light dictated very dubious camera settings Image cannot be loaded
Fox

Saw this chap out of the corner of my eye whilst photographing the woodpecker. There has been a family of foxes in the public park behind our house for as long as I can remember and we have been there 18 years! And this is one of the best pics I have been able to get, so quite pleased Image cannot be loaded

Had the lens resting in the corner of the window frame for stability and the end of the lens barrel must have been touching the glass because as I rattled off a dozen shots or so he must have heard the shutter through the glass!!! and turned to look right down the lens......amazing Image cannot be loaded

Another view of the farm wagon. This is really good weekend for all the family well worth earmarking if you in the area end of July. Mainly based around military re-enactments but plenty of other interest as well. The military action starts somewhere around the American Civil war and comes right up to the 39-45 world war Image cannot be loaded
Great Spotted Woodpeckers
© Dave John (view gallery)
Very hasty shot of a pair of Great Spotted Woodpeckers that frequent my garden. Female left, male right. This is the first time I've seen them together and just by chance the long lens was already on the box brownie. A very rushed shot, technically quite poor AND shot through a very dirty window! Shot towards the top end of the 70-300 but resting on the window frame to aid stability. But all in all not a bad effort for a grab shot. Image cannot be loaded

Hull Fair is one of Europe's largest travelling funfairs, which comes to Hull, for one week, from noon on Friday to midnight the following Saturday, encompassing the 11th of October each year. Unlike small local fairs, Hull Fair attracts rides, attractions and travellers from a wide variety of different regions from around the country.

Carrying on with such tradition, the fair is opened by the Lord Mayor of Hull on the opening evening, normally at 5 pm. It first opened from 9 to 23 March 1278. Image cannot be loaded

Until quite recently the longest single span suspension bridge in the world. Outdone by the bridge that serves Hong Kongs' new airport. Oh well.....never mind. Image cannot be loaded

One of smaller 'non military' exhibits in the park. The monkey still worked perfectly. Put some coins on his hand and he would tip them into the bowl. The grandson cost me a few pennies here!! Image cannot be loaded

My friend the 'spinner'
© Dave John (view gallery)
This lady, Chan Brown, has been attending the Hull War Veterans weekend for several years. You can see one of my previous photos on the shelf behind her. She spins yarn from all sorts of animals. The bear she is holding was commissioned by a lady from a local village using the hair of her Labrador Retriever (I think!!) It is even quite poignant now because the dog had died recently, and the lady was coming to the show to collect the bear over the weekend. I took this picture and a couple of others in to Chan on the Sunday morning and the lady for the bear had not yet been so Chan said she would give her one of the pictures along with the bear. Wish I could have stayed all day to get them both together!! The yarn on the spinning wheel at the moment has been brushed from a Border Collie Image cannot be loaded
