This cradle is moved by an electric motor on either end that moves it across the bridge.
On the 4th of September 1990, two men were killed when one of the motors failed and the other kept running causing the cradle to plunge into the river. Image cannot be loaded

Looks can be deceptive....... The river here can be very treacherous with 13 knot tidal currents due to the fact that the tidal rise and fall here is the second highest in the world. (15m on Spring tides). The sun sets behind the Second Severn Crossing. Image cannot be loaded
