About Dumbleton

Dumbleton in the county of Gloucestershire is a small picturesque Cotswold village situated on the edge of Dumbleton Hill, and within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The village is known to have existed since the time of Æthelred I, King of Wessex from 865 until he died in 871. He was the elder brother of Alfred the Great, and granted land to Abingdon Abbey. Dumbleton is also mentioned in the Doomsday Book.

As well as typical thatched cottages and homes made from the golden hued limestone that typifies the Cotswolds, other buildings of note include the wonderful timber-framed Old Rectory, which is a Grade II listed building, and also the magnificent Dumbleton Hall, which has a history dating back to 1534, though was rebuilt in the mid 19th century using Cotswold stone, and in 1959 became a hotel. It is also a Grade II listed building.
