Marble Arch was was designed by John Nash and purpose built in 1828 to be the grand entrance to Buckingham Palace. It is constructed of white Carrara marble and has three archways of Corinthian columns. In 1851 Buckingham Palace was extended, thus leaving insufficient space for this magnificent Arch and as a result it was relocated to become the new entrance to Hyde Park, replacing Cumberland Gate. Due to road layout alterations in both 1908 and 1961, Marble Arch now resides on a traffic island site in an area historicaly known as Tyburn.
