About Gorton

Gorton is a suburb of Greater Manchester, it is best known for the Nico Ditch, an early Danish earthwork forming the old boundary between Gorton and Levenshulme.

Following the introduction of the railways in 1845 the town began to flourish as more job opportunities became available to the community. Then came the canals, the Ashton canal flows through the district and when the Gorton Mills were built they quickly became a major employer, by the 1880's these mills gave employment to upwards of 1500 people.

Employment in the area now largely depends on technology and light industry.

There are good local recreational facilities at Gorton Reservoir in Debdale Park, this is a popular local landmark for residents and visitors alike.

Manchester, with the grand delights of a large city is but a short distance away.
