Pictures of Platt Hall

a Historic Building in the town of Manchester, in the county of Greater Manchester

About Platt Hall

This is a pleasant russet brick house built by Timothy Lightoler in the Mid 18th-century. The interior contains one of the most important collections of English costume, with clothing, accessories and books relating to the subject from the 17th-century, through to the present day.

The house is interesting in that it was the home of the staunch Parliamentarian leader, Charles Worsley, who was a close friend of Oliver Cromwell, and who was a central figure of the Civil War.

The present house stands on the site of the earlier Worsley family home, this was an Elizabethan timber-frame building which was replaced by the present property of Georgian design in 1764. In 1775, the estate, together with all adjoining lands including Platt Fields and the land on which Holy Trinity Church stands, passed into the hands of the Caril-Worsley's and it they who subsequently built the church.

Platt Hall draws visitors from all over Europe, it is a Mecca for anyone interested in fashion, particularly for the serious student intent upon discovering the history of English fashion. It has the most wonderful displays of gowns and costume made from stunning fabrics, these include garments of the finest tweed right through to dazzling lace evening attire.

Admission is free, Platt Hall can be found at the centre of one of Manchester's largest public park's Platt Fields, in Rusholme, Manchester.
