This divine house is a masterpiece of James Wyatt, one of the greatest architects to come out of the 18th century. It was built for Sir Thomas Edgerton, later Ist Earl of Wilton, who had inherited the house in 1756 when he was still a minor.
The house is a glorious celebration of design in the Neo-Classical style, although with softer lines than those promoted by Adam's Neo-Classicism. Wyatt's style is altogether prettier and more charming.
After owning the house for over two hundred years the Edgerton family sold it to Manchester City Corporation. Sadly, the entire contents of the house were sold off and the house was let for a variety of uses. However, around 1972 the corporation began to realise the potential of the house as an historic tourist attraction. Heaton Hall underwent a period of refurbishment, and the house was transformed back to the beauty it possessed in its "hey-day" giving visitors a glimpse of what life was like in the 18th and 19th centuries.
There are many original features to be seen at Heaton, these include rare wall paintings in the Cupola room, a magnificent Music room complete with chamber organ, and ornate plasterwork to most of the rooms on show.
Visitors can see lovely gardens and stroll in over 650 acres of stunning parkland. The house can be hired for weddings and other functions, there is a picnic area, playgrounds and a place for refreshments.
Heaton Hall Estate makes a delightful day out for all the family.
