The Painted Hall

Painted by Sir James Thornhill from 1708-1729. The painted hall is one of the great rooms of Britain. He received £3 per square yard for the ceiling and £1 per square yard for the walls. He did receive a knighthood in 1720. (The first English artist to be honoured in such a way) This photo is the main part of the ceiling. It shows King William III of Orange and Queen Mary. William's foot is planted firmly on the catholic Louis XIV, the Sun King. Louis being represented by an angel carrying a sun.
