Camden Place at Chislehurst Golf Club

Camden Place, Chislehurst, Originally the home of William Camden, the topographer, scholar and onetime headmaster of Westminster School who arrived at Chislehurst in 1609, the house was replaced in 1780 with this building, which was altered in 1807 and again in the 1860’s when Nathaniel Strode introduced a French flavour to the design. A friend of Emperor Napoleon III, the house made an ideal home for the emperor after his defeat in the Franco-Prussian war and his enforced exile from France. Following the emperor’s death his wife move to Farnborough in Hampshire. After a short time in the ownership of William Willett, the proposer of daylight saving, it became the home of Chislehurst Golf Club.
