Hartshead Pike has been a beacon hill since Roman times. From the summit at 940 feet above sea level you can see four counties. Before the Romans local tribes lit fires here to celebrate the seasons and it might have been the site of Druid sacrifices in the Iron Age. After the Romans the Anglo Saxons inhabited the ground where some say they held their mote or moot to appoint leaders and make laws. In recent times the pike has been the scene for UFO sightings. The present tower, although they have been several, was built in Victorian times and was used as a refreshments centre for walkers and tourists. It is now closed. There is an air of mystery and drama about the place when you visit and you do come away feeling you have encountered history close up.
