This is a spectacular garden hidden in pleasant countryside overlooking the Beaulieu River in the New Forest.
The meticulous landscaped grounds and garden surround a great house. Purchased in 1919 by Lionel Nathen de Rothschild, the house at the heart of the Exbury Estate became home to Lionel and his family. It was then that began his grand passion for gardening which was to continue throughout the Rothschild dynasty.
In these beautiful gardens visitors can see the world famous Rothschild plant collection which includes stunning rhododendrons and azaleas flourishing in a glorious woodland setting. Lionel Rothschild, was an unassuming man who preferred to think of himself as a gardener by profession rather than a highly successful banker! Gardening became all consuming, and he planted many of the estates fabled trees, flowers and plants.
Beautifully laid out the gardens possess a wealth of charm, they are one of Hampshire's foremost attractions visited by over 120,000 tourists each year. The range to see is wide and varied, with garden statutory, rockeries, cascades and ponds. There is a famous Water garden, and the Heather and Rose gardens greet the eye as complete visions of loveliness. Visitors can wander at will, enjoying themed walks, nature trails, a lovely riverside walk, and many magnificent ancient trees.
Exbury Gardens give year round pleasure, when the earth awakes after the long winter months the gardens are a riot of soft colours as rhododendrons, azaleas, maples and camellias begin to blossom. Autumn weaves its own magic with vibrant splashes of glowing autumnal reds, orange and gold.
The estate is not just attractive to gardeners, but has something for everyone including its own narrow gauge steam railway which runs through part of the gardens and is fun for the whole family. There is also a programme of events and festivities, these range from craft fairs to orchestral evenings, outdoor theatre, with the year being rounded off with Christmas festivities and special Santa Steam Trains.
This tranquil paradise lends itself perfectly as a romantic setting for weddings, giving a lucky couple the most memorable of experiences, or as a stunning venue for corporate events.
