About Milford on Sea

The advent of the railways brought the Victorians flocking the enjoy the delights of Milford beach, which is mostly sand and shingle and from which, safe bathing can be enjoyed. The town comprises mostly of modern buildings and offers all the usual seaside attractions. On a clear day, there are excellent views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.

A short distance away is Hurst Castle. The castle can be reached either by foot, across the pebble causeway or by ferry from Keyhaven. The castle was built by Henry VIIIth in 1544, who felt that together with his other defences on the Isle of Wight, the Solent could be effectively closed. In turn the castle has been abandoned and re-used. King Charles stayed there in the year 1648 when he was en-route to face trial in London. In more recent times, Troops were billeted there during the Second World War and sometimes the two Victorian wings are used by the M.O.D. The castle has seen some turbulent times and has been modified on several occassions. It is open to the public and worth a visit.

The tiny inlet of Keyhaven is nearby. The inlet is tidal and low tide reveals muddy saltmarsh. There is safe mooring here for a small number of gaily coloured boats and it is the terminal for the Hurst Castle ferry.
