The Great Hall

Winchester Castle dates from the reign of William the Conqueror (1066-1087). By the end of King John's reign in 1216 the Castle and its royal palace needed extensive repair. Between 1222 and 1235 the Castle's Great Hall was replaced by the building which stands today. The Great Hall is the only other surviving building of Winchester Castle, which extended south from the Westgate through this whole area. The north doorway and four of the eight stained glass windows of the Great Hall can be seen.
