City Mill

There has been a mill here on the Itchen since Saxon times, when Queen Elfrida granted a mill to Wherwell Abbey in about 988. The mill passed to the crown at the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and in 1554 was granted by Queen Mary to the City of Winchster to help defray the cost of her marriage here to Philip of Spain. The current mill was built in 1744 as a tannery and later became a corn mill. It lost its machinery and was a youth hostel for many years. It was restored and started milling again in 2004 and was fitted with new Dutch made millstones in 2007. The wheel was turning but most of the visible flow is in the bypass channel.
