About Eastnor

Eastnor Castle, built in the early 1800's for the 1st Earl Somers to the design of Robert Smirke, who also designed the British Museum, stands as a splendid testimonial to this prosperious period in English history. The castle is a Norman-style mansion with tall turreted towers at each corner, with a central keep. It overlooks a pretty lake and parkland and to this day the castle remains in the family that built it, who still run the estate.

Although very much a private home Eastnor Castle is open to the public on most days throughout the summer. As with many of to-days large estates, parts of the Castle are now available for Weddings and other functions, it is also a popular venue for Shooting parties and Landrover trials.

Opposite the entrance to the Castle is Eastnor Park. This pretty landscape is now open to touring caravans thus, fishing folk from all over the Midlands converge here for a few days fishing from the well stocked Carp lakes. Sheep, cattle and deer roam freely amongst the visitors, all of which adds to the gentle charm of this peaceful, quiet place.

Close to the castle gate-house, there is a church, a school and several pretty black and white thatched cottages. To this day no pub or restaurant exists within the village but these and a good variety of shops can be found in nearby Ledbury, just a mile or so away.
