About Kington

This is a small ancient market town sheltered by the Hergest Ridge which rises to a height of over 1,380 ft. The town is situated near the Welsh border, with the lovely River Arrow flowing through.

It is a town of narrow streets which blessedly remain crammed with individual shops run by owner occupiers, thus you are assured of personal attention and a warm and friendly reception.

For centuries this was a place important for sheep and cattle with a flourishing market. The landscape around here still remains flooded with animals, and for those walking Offa's Dyke along Hergest Ridge there is an abundance of wildlife to be seen, including wild ponies.

The town clock is a prominent feature, as is the Norman church. Some of the town's older buildings were lost to the Victorian period when new buildings became the rage, but a few attractive Georgian buildings survive.

One modern day claim to fame is that Kington has the highest golf course in the country, another is that Mike Oldfield lived locally during the mid-1970's, it was here that he recorded two of his albums - Harvest Ridge and Ommadawn.

Walking is the favoured pastime of the region, try Offa's Dyke or the Mortimer Trail long distance path. It is the walkers who reap the rewards of this fine border region which has views of rivers, marshland and majestic mountains.

For those not so hardy there are plenty of other place to visit, these include a Working Horse Centre at Banley Farm, a Small Breeds Farm with gardens, animals and a shop, and magnificent Hergest Croft Gardens which also has a shop.
