Early morning sun on the North side of the Wye valley seen from the Gospel Pass, the highest road pass in Wales. It is at the head of the Vale of Ewyas in the Black Mountains of southeast Wales. The narrow mountain road climbs steeply from Hay-on-Wye to a height of 549m above sea level, squeezing between the mountains of Twmpa to the west and Hay Bluff to the east before dropping down into the valley to the south on its way to Llanthony, where my youngest daughter lives.

The nave, chancel and belfry date from the 15th century with a 17th century south entrance porch. It is an extremely simple building, standing in a rocky field (which is why there is no graveyard). To the north of the church is a shallow rectangular depression said to have been a fives court; to the north-west is a further depression, probably the remains of a cock-pit.

A BRIEF HISTORY of DORE ABBEY. The Abbey was founded in 1147 by French Cistercian Monks from Morimond. Construction of the present stone buildings in the ‘new’ early English style started in 1175 and was consecrated in 1275. Cistercian monks were not academic recluses but were skilled at managing their agricultural lands. In Dore’s case breeding sheep with fine wool. The wool was of exceptional quality and was sold in Italy. The Abbey avoided being razed by Owen Glendower in 1405. It was suppressed (dissolved) by Henry VIII in 1537 and the buildings sold to Lord John Scudamore. All the monastic buildings and the nave and roof of the Abbey were dismantled and the stone sold by Scudamore. All that remained (i.e. the present Abbey) was left as a roofless ruin until c1630. John Scudamore’s great-great-grandson (John Viscount Scudamore) had no male heir, all his sons having died at birth or soon after. Archbishop Laud suggested that his ancestor had perhaps overdone the commercial benefits of the dissolution and that a penance may help. Restoring the ruins into a Parish Church was deemed an appropriate penance and the rebuilt church was re-consecrated in 1634. Subsequently, Scudamore’s wife had a son who survived ! Laud had considerable influence on the restored church. The Screen through which the raised altar can be seen by the congregation was one of his innovations. His coat of arms together with those of Lord Scudamore and Charles I are on the Screen. The Church was further restored, first around 1700 when the wall paintings were created and later around 1900 when the Church was ‘shrunk’ into what had been the presbytery. The Church you see today has been little altered since the 1900 rearrangement.Today it enjoys regular Church services, has a fine organ and is the venue for many concerts.

The Church of St Michael and All Angels sits alongside the ruins of the moated Lyonshall Castle. The current building dates mostly from the 13th century, but its appearance today owes much to a substantial renovation carried out in 1872-3 by the Rev. Charles Edward Maddison-Green. The imposing church tower houses a peal of six bells, which were recast by Abraham Rudhall of Gloucester in 1727 and rehung in 1924 in a metal frame.

St. Michael Dulas near Ewyas Harold Dulas is a Civil Parish in the County of Herefordshire in England. There is no village as such named Dulas; the Parish consists mainly of scattered farms and dwellings. The major buildings within the Parish are Dulas Court, a Victorian country house now used as a residential home, and the now redundant Church of St. Michael. This is the replacement for a much older building, which was demolished when the Court was built; all that remains of the original Church are an ancient cross and a couple of gravestones on the front lawn of the residential home.

St. Michael and All Angels Ewyas Harold is a village and civil parish in the Golden Valley in Herefordshire, England near to the Welsh border with present day Monmouthshire, and about half way between the towns of Abergavenny and Hereford. It lies on the Dulas brook and is contiguous with the neighbouring village of Pontrilas. It was the site of Ewyas Harold Castle, now disappeared. The village contains a number of amenities, such as a school, fire station and redundant Catholic Church. The Church of England Ministry of St. Michael and All Angels is now linked with that of several neighbouring Parishes.

All Saints' Church in Brockhampton, is set in beautiful countryside high above the River Wye and lies between the historic city of Hereford and the market town of Ross-on-Wye. It is one of a few thatched churches in the country.

The Parish of Clodock grew around its Church which was founded in about 500 AD and dedicated to Saint Clydawg. According to the Herefordshire Sites and Monuments Record, the Church here at Clodock dates from the Saxon era. Clydawg, the Church's Patron Saint was a 6th Century Martyr.

The first Castle in the district was at Pont Hendre and was probably built by either Walter de Lacy or his son Roger de Lacy. It was the scene of bitter fighting between Roger Fitzmiles, 2nd Earl of Hereford, Gilbert Talbot and the de Lacys in the Anarchy of 1136 to 1154, during the reign of King Stephen. Gilbert de Lacy won the contest and his second son Hugh de Lacy was recorded as holding this district in 1166. Hugh de Lacy was killed in Ireland in 1186 and the next year two Castles were recorded in this district in the Royal Pipe Rolls. These were Pont Hendre and the recently built Longtown which was described as a new Castle. In 1189 Hugh's son Walter de Lacy was granted Longtown Castle and he was probably responsible for much of the masonry that dominates the town. Walter died greatly in debt to the Crown in 1241 after a very active and varied career. East of the Masonry Castle is a rectangular enclosure which may well be the fortification made by Harold Godwinson in 1056. Harold went on to become King Harold II who was killed at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. It is maintained today by English Heritage.
