About Wheathampstead

What was once a quiet village is now swallowed up by the advancement of industry and the urban sprawl of Hertfordshire. In more gracious days, the town had lovely old cottages, many of which have disappeared or been turned into shops.

An abiding feature of Wheathampstead is it beautiful 14th-century church dedicated to Saint Helen. It is cruciform in shape with a splendid spire crowning the tower. The building is Grade 1 listed and has remained virtually unchanged for over 600 years. In the vast interior, one of the most noteworthy treasures in the church, is the canopied piscina, or priests wash basin standing to the right of the high alter. It is from the Middle Ages and said to have been the gift of the Macry family. The church also possesses fine stained glass and many monuments.

Of interest too, is the black and white, Bull Inn an attractive pub with tall chimney's and several original features. It is an atmospheric place where you can relax and enjoy a quiet drink accompanied by a tasty meal. Not far away is Water End Farm said to be the birth-place of Sarah Jennings who later became the first Duchess of Marlborough. Although lowly born, Sarah was a highly charismatic woman of high principles, a fitting ancestor for Sir Winston Churchill. Shaw's Corner, owned by the National Trust lies close by, as does Knebworth House. The great Cathedral at St.Albans is within easy driving distance.
