Pictures of Quarr Abbey

a Historic Building in the town of Quarr Hill, in the county of Isle of Wight

About Quarr Abbey

The ruins of Quarr Abbey can be found close to the entrance of Wooten Creek, a pretty waterway used by small fishing boats and pleasure craft. It is an area abundant in natural beauty where many archaeological finds have been made and its status as a site of special scientific interest confirms a high level of environmental protection.

Quarr Abbey was founded as a Benedictine monastery in 1132, it flourished for several hundred years until the reign of Henry VIII when his wish to divorce Queen Catherine caused a division with the church of Rome and the dissolution of the monasteries. Most of the monastic buildings were demolished, including the church. The romantic Abbey ruins can still be seen.

The new Quarr Abbey is a stunning spacious church with great shafts of light dappling mellow brick walls. It was founded in 1908 and completed in 1912. It is a wonderful place of worship and a glorious testimony to the art of the early 20th-century craftsman.

If you happen to visit the Isle of Wight, you should experience both the ancient ruins and the new Abbey where you will be amazed at the becalmed atmosphere of this unique blend of old and new. There are stunning views of beautiful coastal scenery.
