Dover - town and major ferry port . Its strategic position has been evident throughout its history: archaeological finds have revealed that the area has always been a focus for peoples entering and leaving Britain. The name of the town derives from the name of the river that flows through it, the River Dour. The higher land on either side of the valley – the Western Heights and the eastern high point on which Dover Castle stands – has been adapted to perform the function of protection against invaders.

This cute Victorian lighthouse was built to guide mariners away from the notorious Goodwin Sands. No longer used, it is owned by the National Trust and may be visited.

Port of Dover . The prospect of privatising the sale of the Port of Dover to create increased cash flow for the government was given a recent ironic twist due to the rejection of a possible bid from the town of Calais in France after opposition in Dover against any sale forced the government to withdraw the Port from the market. Local residents had clubbed together to propose buying it for the community, more than 12,000 people have bought a £10 share in the People's Port Trust.

Dover Lifeboat 'RNLB City of London II'.

Dover lifeboat 'RNLB City of London II', seen here moored close to the Dover Lifeboat Station, is a Severn Class lifeboat in service since 1997 and named after the longest river in Britain. The small building to the left of the clock tower in the background is the original lifeboat station dating back to the 1800's. A total of 46 of these boats were built at a cost of £2m each. Dover lifeboats have been saving lives at sea since 1837 and received over 30 awards for gallantry since that time.

The old bronze cannons outside Dover Town Hall. I remember these as a boy of four and so does my father when he was a lad. Living in Queens Court (around the back of the Town Hall). Queens court was bombed out during WWII.

A solitary fishing boat sits on the pebbles of Shakespeare Beach, Dover, Kent. The cliff in background is known as 'Shakespeare Cliff', so called as it is said to have inspired a passage from Shakespeare’s King Lear; Shakespeare was a frequent visitor to Dover at the time of writing it.

A real and getting rarer 'Adder' snake, Britain's only venomous reptile, caught on Camera on top of Shakespear Cliff, Dover. A warning to Mums and Dads when walking Children up there....The cliff isn't your only worry... Mind you its the first one I've seen in 47 years of being warned by Mum to keep out of the long grass!

When I visited the White Cliffs in August, there were hundreds of butterflies among the chalk grassland, and there was one spot where they were particularly concentrated. I saw Common, Chalkhill and Adonis Blues, as well as small copper, marbled white and other species.
