The ruins of Snowdown Colliery in Kent. Taken 2005. Snowdown Colliery was producing coal from 1912. It was nicknamed 'Dante's Inferno' by the miners, who frequently suffered heat stroke and could consume 24 pints of water in an 8 hour working shift at the mine. Most of the miners would work naked due to the heat and humidity of the pit. Snowdown eventually closed in 1987
