About Tonbridge

A pleasant market town built on the River Medway. It has fine streets showing a rich variety of architecture including typical Wealden tile-hung properties, and handsome Georgian and Victorian buildings dominating the river scene where you can see a picturesque balustrade bridge.

It is a lively town with interesting shops, markets, and pleasant walk-ways. The are several noted inns, The Humphrey Bean, named for a former landlord of a pub which stood on the same spot more than a hundred years ago, was the town's former post office. It is now converted to a relaxing place in which to enjoy a drink. The historic church dedicated to St.Peter and St.Paul is well worth a visit, it sits close some pretty timber-frame black and white houses which are worth noting. Tonbridge School founded in 1553 by a former Lord Mayor of London, can be seen at the top of the town.

The river offer splendid scope for a wide range of activities. Boats are available for hire, and there are organised river trips. There are pleasant river-side picnic spots, and places from which to fish and enjoy river wildlife.

Tonbridge is perhaps best known for its beautiful ruined castle set in glorious grounds at the side of the river, the gatehouse is one of the finest of its kind and dates from the 13th-century.

This is a lively place, where there is always something going on. As such it offers an attractive destination for a pleasant weekend or a longer stay to explore other delightful Kentish towns and villages, and to see the many windmills and beauty spots of the weald.
