Grain Tower.

Grain Tower is about a quarter of a mile off the coast of the Isle of Grain in Kent. It was built in 1855 and was circular in design, similar to the earlier Martello towers. It was manned during the two world wars and was decommissioned in 1946. About a mile away are the remains of the U.S.S. Richard Montgomery. Built in 1944, she was loaded with over 6,000 tons of bombs and ammunition and was on her way to Cherbourg. She berthed off the town of Sheerness while waiting for her convoy to form, but on 20th August 1944 strong winds blew her onto a sandbank where she remains to this day. About half her deadly cargo remains on board. At low tide her masts can be seen above the water.
