About Fleetwood

Fleetwood lies directly opposite Morecambe Bay at the mouth of the River Wyre. On a clear day there are views across the bay to the fells of the Lake District and inland to the beautiful Lune valley and the Pennines in the north.

This is noted as the first planned town of the Victorian era, in 1847 Queen Victoria visited the town on her way back from Scotland. In the early days of the railways Fleetwood was the northern terminus of the line from Euston, with connections via the sea to both Scotland and Ireland.

Fleetwood was once famous as a fishing port, but now it is more likely the visitor will see yachts and leisure boats lined up at the pretty quayside. Despite much modern development visitors can still visit the jetties where the few Fleetwood trawlers left still offload their catch. This is also the place to hire a boat, or join in one of the many sea fishing trips under the watchful eye of an experienced skipper.

A bustling Harbour Village backs Fleetwood Marina, this covers a 75 acre site offering a residential development and a major retail outlet known as Freeport Shopping Village. Here you will find excellent shopping, pubs, cafe's and restaurants. The marina itself has berths for around 300 boats of various size and shops to supply everything necessary for sailing.

Fleetwood has three lighthouses, one is the first of its kind to be erected in Great Britain, the other two can be seen in the town. On the seafront there is a leisure centre offering activity sports, this is next door to the swimming pool. In the summer months an outdoor pool is open and there is a free paddling pool for children. Windsurfing is a popular activity, but for those in search of more gentle sport there is a small model yacht lake where local championships are held.

The nautical and seafaring history of Fleetwood can be explored in the town museum, this is well worth a visit for its galleries focusing on the people connected with past and present fishing, including boats and equipment. You can also experience a trip on a fishing boat and listen to the yarns of the town's old fisher-folk.

The Fylde Coast is very beautiful, this lovely seaside resort has plenty to offer visitors including pleasant gardens, golf, the Wyre estuary, and lovely golden sands.
