About Hoghton

Hoghton is situated near to Preston, it is perhaps best known for stately Hoghton Tower, a fortified 16th century mansion set on a steep wooded hill with remarkable views over the surrounding countryside towards the coast of Lancashire. It was here that James I created "Sirloin" when he supposedly knighted his beef! This magnificent house has been central to the life of the area for centuries, it is the ancestral home of the Hoghton family who are directly descended from Norman times. However, the present house was built almost entirely during the Elizabethan period.

Ghostly legends surround the history of the house and one of the best ways to see the treasures of the property is to attend one of the Ghostly Evening's organised during the winter months, when you get to see parts of the house not usually on public view. The house is approached by a spectacular "long drive" presided over by ancient trees set around sweeping lawns.

The house is open to the public, showing a range of fine furniture, a collection of dolls houses, excellent Queen Anne panelling and a galleried banqueting hall. There is also a Tudor well house.

As recently as May 2005 freak weather caused a mini-tornado to rip through the village. Although there was considerable damage to properties there was no loss of life. The village remains as serene as ever and is a pleasant place to visit.
