About Rufford

Noted for its picturesque late-medieval manor house Rufford Old Hall, the village of Rufford occupies a fine setting on the fertile Lancashire Plains.

With the waters of the River Douglas flowing nearby, and the Rufford Canal, there is plenty of scope for boating activities, pleasant riverside walks to explore river-meadows inhabited by a rich variety of wildlife. There are lovely wooded areas, where you can soak up some peace and quiet whilst enjoying the sound of song birds, and watching the antics of rabbits and squirrels. Owls, Hawks and Pheasants mingle in the woods, and you may even catch a sighting of gentle roe deer.

Parbold Beacon, a short drive out of the village, rises to 394ft and gives lovely countryside and river views. Wrightington Bar, is an attractive village reached through narrow lanes which according to local legend were once the haunt of highwaymen.

A major attraction in the area is Martin Mere Wildlife and Wetland Trust Nature Reserve. This is an internationally important reserve were on seasonally flooded wetlands, large numbers of ducks, geese and swans form spectacular feeding flocks.

There is much to see and experience in this attractive part of Lancashire. Rufford is in close proximity to some fine sandy beaches, two famous golf courses - Royal Lytham St.Anne's and Royal Birkdale, and there are numerous Lancastrian villages and market towns with historic buildings and interesting churches.

You will find good accommodation in the region and a fine selection of pubs and restaurants. Ormskirk, Eccleston and Skelmersdale offer attractive shopping facilities.
