About Alvingham

This charming village is set alongside the old Louth Navigation Canal. It is noted for having the only church in England dedicated to Saxon St.Adlewold and interestingly, shares a churchyard with St.Mary's church which was once the chapel of a 12th-century priory. Both churches are singularly beautiful, each with special features - St.Adelwold's was left abandoned for many years but was lovingly restored during the first half of the last century. St.Mary's remains a much loved and much used church which retains many of it's historic Norman features.

Alvingham's other treasure is its beautiful working watermill from the 18th-century. Built of red-brick with red roof and chimney, this attractive building occupies a lovely location where wildfowl grace the water and in the nearby watermeadows, cattle and sheep graze contentedly. The area has an harmonious atmosphere, making it an ideal location for exploring the many nature reserves and natural habitats along the coast from Sutton-on-Sea to Spurn Head at the mouth of the mighty Humber river.
