A picture of Gainsborough

Thonock Hill, Gainsborough. In 1013, the Viking King of Denmark, Sweyn Forkbeard, together with his son Canute, arrived with an army to conquer the Danelaw and ultimately England. He moored his ships at the haven at Morton Bight, near Gainsborough, and marched his force to the nearby encampment on Thonock Hill. This encampment was in the wood to the right of this picture. The village of Morton is at the bottom of the hill, and the Vikings would have marched up this road to reach the encampment (of couse it wouldn't have been tarmaced then). Sweyn died the following year (1014) after falling from his horse in Gainsborough. His son Canute succeeded him.
