About Liverpool Cathedral

That Liverpool should finally have a Roman Catholic Cathedral of its own, was a dream come true when on 14th May 1967, the beautiful starkly modern building designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd (1908-1984) was consecrated.

A huge circle of stained glass crowns the building throwing rays of light into the church beneath. Above this towers an intricate metal structure, giving the cathedral an almost rocket like appearance. The outer wall of the cathedral is formed by sixteen small buildings, eight of which are chapels separated by sheets of deep blue glass.

The interior of the cathedral is equally impressive, above the high alter hangs a suspended metal structure symbolizing the crown of thorns.

Since the cathedral was consecrated it has been the scene of many moving commemorative services, and has been widely attended by dignitaries of other faiths.

The cathedral can be found on the outskirts of the City of Liverpool, there is a bookshop on site and guides are there to help you.
