About New Brighton

New Brighton in the Wiirral may not be quite what the traditional Brighton of the South of England is, with its extravaganza of a Royal Pavilion, but what it does have is well worth sampling.

It is an urbanised resort, only around 15 minutes by ferry from Liverpool. Before the days of package holidays, its seven miles of sandy coastline with entertainments was the premier resort of the North West. Sadly, New Brighton Tower was destroyed by fire in 1969, and its pier was demolished in the 1980's.

A feature of New Brighton is Fort Perch Rock, built in 1830 at the same time as the lighthouse was built to guide the shipping lanes to the Isle of Man and Ireland. The last time the fort was in use was in the middle of the 20th-century when it was used by the Army, it now remains as a focus for the camera's of tourists.

Many families still flock to New Brighton attracted by its vast expanse of sands, fresh sea air and the simple pleasure of watching ships glide majestically in and out of Liverpool. Pleasure cruises can be arranged, either for sea fishing or to explore the Mersey River and the coastal sands extending round to the estuary of the River Dee. Water-sports are popular, especially power skiing in the Mersey estuary.

There is an abundance of places to stay, plenty of cafe's, restaurants and pubs, pleasant places to visit, particularly the museum at Wallasey which recalls the heritage of the area and its seafaring history, best of all for the children there is a good old fashioned fun fair!
