This fascinating art gallery was built by the Ist Viscount Leverhulme, the great benefactor who founded the Lever empire and later built the garden village of Port Sunlight to house his factory workers.
Lady Lever died in 1913, the gallery, designed as a memorial to her was completed and opened in 1922. It contains one of the most beautiful collections of decorative works of art in the country. British painters are strongly represented by a magnificent display of 18th and 19th century paintings, and there are collections of Wedgwood, Chinese porcelain and stunning 18th century furniture, including some made by Thomas Chippendale the Elder.
Some of the rooms contain fine Stuart and Tudor pieces, Carrara marble mantle-pieces and interesting clocks. The Sculpture Hall contains many rare marble figures including Roman and Greek.
At the gallery visitors can expect to find special exhibitions and a featured artwork of the month.
Apart from the rich treasures contained in the gallery, the building itself is both beautiful and interesting, from the time its foundation stone was laid in 1914 the building took eight years to complete. Lord Leverhulme wanted a fitting tribute to the woman of whom he said "without her there would have been neither Port Sunlight, nor Lever Brothers" this he got in full measure, for the gallery cannot fail but inspire all who see it today.
