About Burnham Overy Staithe

Lying on the broad expanse between Hunstanton and Stiffkey Marshes, is the delightful sailing village of Burnham Overy Staithe from which there are spectacular views towards Scolt Head Island.

Once known as a seaport and a place where cockle-pickers gathered to collect their supper, Burnham Overy Staithe now operates as a small resort town. It is quite picturesque with colourful small boats beached along the shore amongst a spectacle of wild sea-lavender. A popular all-year round destination, the town is at its busiest during the summer. There is a wealth of wildlife to explore and on the harbour front there is a house bearing a plaque proclaiming that it was once the home of 'Richard Woodget' master of The Cutty Sark in 1899! Next to the River Burn there are several old mill buildings and an 18th-century water mill-a landmark, seen from miles around. The historic Church of St. Clement dates prior to the 13th-century, it has a lovely interior with a beautiful wall painting of St.Christopher and some commemorative brasses. In the quiet churchyard there are the graves of sailors and over centuries the parish records show a number of bodies washed up on the shore.

This is one of the most unspoilt of all Norfolk's coastal resorts, it is a joy to visit at any time of year. For those who like their holidays 'away from it all' it is best visited in early spring or autumn, when not much disturbs the peace save for the shriek of wild sea birds circling the sky above.

Places to visit include: Titchwell Marsh Wildfowl Sanctuary, Holkham Hall, Little Walsingham, Wells-next-the-Sea, Wells Harbour Railway, Hunstanton, The Kingdom of the Sea.
