About Gorleston-on-Sea

Popular seaside resort which these days almost merges with Great Yarmouth. In former days visitors lined the quay to watch the grand spectacle of hundreds of fishing boats being off-loaded, the herring fleet sailed out in all weathers, watched over by the handsome red brick lighthouse whose only function now is to guide gas rig supply vessels and pleasure craft.

Quieter than its near neighbour, Gorleston has a prestigious Blue Flag beach which is especially attractive to families. The bay is backed by lovely gardens and a cliff-top promenade from which there are superb views across the harbour and pier to the ocean whose far horizons is tinged with a swiftly setting sun.

The resort offers a wide range of attractions, these include; a theatre, cabaret room, swimming pool, beach-side bars and cafe's, sporting activities such as pitch and putt, and boat trips can be taken. There are several pubs, some providing entertainment, and plenty of restaurants and take-always. There is a wide selection of shops, and a good choice of accommodation to suit all tastes.

In the older part of the town you can still see pretty colour-washed fishermen's cottages. Some of these are owner-occupied and some are let out as delightful holiday retreats. Interestingly, in World War II, Gorleston was a base for the R.A.F Air-Sea rescue operations and in celebration of their 60th anniversary a new memorial was unveiled by the present Air Chief Marshall of the R.A.F.

Close proximity to picturesque Suffolk and the Norfolk Broads adds to Gorleston's immense appeal. Not only is it a pleasant spot to holiday but it makes an attractive base to tour the area, possibly taking in some of the areas isolated beauty spots or visiting the Roman remains of Caister where Caister Castle sits in moated splendour. The castle has the added bonus of housing a huge collection of motor vehicles dating from 1894 to the present day.
