About Heacham

At the heart of Norfolk's Lavender growing industry lies the pretty seaside village of Heacham. In high summer the Landscape here is revitalised with differing shades of Mauve and Purple, and the air is heady with the richly intoxicating aroma of fresh Lavender.

Heacham is a coastal village with two fine beaches and it is thought that settlers first came here as early as 3.000bc. One imagines the early settlers were drawn to the region because it was central for food, water and the meat to be taken from the thick forest. The settlers came and somehow survived but not a great deal is documented until around the 12th-century when the village appears to have taken it's name from Geoffrey de Hecham.

A story that surrounds the early 1600's links this pretty village to the Red Indian Princess, Pochahontas and her romantic marriage to the son of John Rolfe, Lord of the Manor of Heacham. This romantic tale is immortalised forever in the Disney film, Pochahontas.

There is evidence of passing historic ages, stone age, bronze age, the romans but the most outstanding tribute to Heacham's past is its magnificent Norman church.

These day's it is the attraction of sun, sea and sand, with the added bonus of glorious field after field of heavenly scented Lavender that makes a trip to this village so worthwhile. Close-by is the Peddars way and Norfolk coast path and there are several interesting RSPB sites. With plenty of restuarants, inns and public houses all serving an excellent menu of fresh sea-food and good wines, you will be able to put to good use the many pleasant village and coastal walks to be enjoyed.
