About Horsey

The tranquil village of Horsey can be found in a landscape dominated by windmills and water. Horsey has a fascinating history, a couple of centuries ago it was a well known centre for smugglers, with contraband being landed on shore and then taken by boat via rivers and the broads for distribution. And, even today, entertain tales of these far off days still get swapped amongst the locals in village and riverside pubs!

Horsey is famous as a sailing centre and for Horsey Mere whose 1900 acres act as a refuge for wildfowl. Not much beats the sight of thousands of migratory birds hovering in the vast Norfolk sky, all intent on finding sanctuary. Marsh Harriers and Cranes can be spotted on an almost daily basis.

During the summer months visitors may see Horsey Windpump, a four storey drainage mill dating to 1911 that is owned and managed by the national trust. From the top of the mill visitors can enjoy glorious views over a sparkling landscape of waters dotted with colourful boats. There is an on site shop selling a small range of refreshments including drinks and ice-cream.

This is excellent walking country, coastal paths give superb ocean views and it is not uncommon to catch a glimpse of basking seals.

The village has a pleasant local inn but there is no longer a village stores.

Hickling Broad and Catfield Common are both just a short distance from Horsey.
