About Wolferton

Wolferton Station could once rival any royal residence for the number of royal personages that passed through it's doors. For around a century Wolferton station welcomed the highest in the land, and overseas visitors included Emperors and Emperesses, Kings, Queens, foreign statesmen and coutiers. There was a never ending retinue, all en-route to be entertained at Sandringham by the British Royal Family. The great estate of Sandringham belonged to the Prince of Wales-the future King Edward VII, who bought it in 1862. It quickly became a favourite Royal residence and an idyllic place for entertaining that late in the 19th-century, the rail track had to be doubled and the station refurbished. In addition, reception rooms of great splendour were built and these include Queen Alexandra's room, a richly panelled room, decorated in great style with paintings, tapestries and delicate glass decanters. It was sheer splendour and no expense was spared.

There is much in Wolferton to remind visitors of the magnificence of by-gone days. The station was sold and is preserved as a private home and a lovingly restored museum containing many original features. Even the Gate House reflects former day's of glory, it is preserved as a private home. The local church did not escape, it contains a Lamp Post, beautifully adorned with a golden crown.

This little place has a history that will be forever linked to a hundred years of Royal events-a fact of which it is rightly proud and the reason why, year after year, it continues to welcome thousands of visitors from home and overseas.
