Studley Royal Park is a designated World Heritage site in North Yorkshire which incorporates the ruins of Fountains Abbey within its 800 acre grounds. The park was landscaped in a picturesque romantic style and is considered to be one of England's most important 18th century water gardens. The garden was created by John Aislabie in 1718 and includes ornamental lakes, canals, temples and cascades, as well as a number of follies. This picture shows the Temple of Piety in its setting by the Moon Pond, transformed by autumn colour.

The Studley Royal Water Gardens created by John Aislabie in 1718 is one of the best surviving examples of a Georgian water garden in England. It was expanded by his son, William who purchased the adjacent Fountains Abbey Estate. The garden's elegant ornamental lakes, canals, temples and cascades provide a succession of dramatic eye-catching vistas.

Temple of Piety

The Temple of Piety was probably started in 1729 as a dedication to Hercules. It is a perfect example of neo-Classicism and was designed as cool garden house on the shady side of the valley. It was later re-designed as a symbol of filial piety by William Aislabie soon after his father's death in 1742.

The Temple of Fame stands on a high bluff overlooking the Water Gardens of Studley Royal. The 'stone' columns look very convincing until tapped, then one discovers that they are actually of wood.
