Castle Howard from the southeast

Castle Howard was built between 1699 and 1712 for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, to a design by Sir John Vanbrugh (who had never built anything in his life before) and Nicholas Hawksmoor. The Castle has been the home of part of the Howard family for more than 300 years. On the night of November 9th, 1940, a disastrous fire which started in the southeast wing, spread to the Great Hall, destroying many rooms and the central dome which was eventually rebuilt in 1962.
