Satyr Gate

This wonderful ornamental stone gateway was carved by Yorkshire carver, Samuel Carpenter in 1705. Ornamental baskets sit on top of a pair of carved satyr heads. In Greek mythology, satyrs are a troop of male companions of the gods, Pan and Dionysus that roamed the woods and mountains. In myths they are often associated with pipe-playing.
