Atlas Fountain

By sculptor and architect, John Thomas (1813–1862), it was installed in the early 1850s. In Greek mythology, Atlas was the Titan who supported the heavens. The five figures are carved from Portland stone and, after being exhibited at the Great Exhibition, were transported to Castle Howard railway station by steam train. Water is fed to this fountain from a local stream up into Ray Wood Reservoir, which lies 60-70 feet above the South Parterre, and from there falls downhill to power all the jets on the Atlas Fountain.
