Robin Hood’s Bay, North Yorkshire.
Not your traditional mermaid – half fish, half woman. No, this one had legs, and she was made entirely out of muscle shells. The man, it seems, had constructed her but he was very reluctant to own up to it or say why he had sculptured her. He just kept on splashing her with water every few minutes then standing back to allow us to photograph her. Having done that, we headed back to the shore before the incoming tide became too deep for our own safety. She remains as much a mystery today as she was at the time.
What happened to her after the tide came in and completely covered her? Who knows! Perhaps she really was a mermaid after all, and once submerged, her tail would reappear for her to swim back to the depths of the ocean from whence she came.
The man? Perhaps they were lovers, and they would both return to the same spot on another day for them to continue their courtship!
Well it’s a nice thought, and you can believe it if you want to!
