About Rockingham

This pretty village has a rising main street flanked by sturdy stone houses. At the top you can find the church and the splendid former royal castle, both of which over the centuries have played an important role in the life of the village.

Rockingham Castle was built by William the Conqueror, it was in consistent use as a fortress until the Middle Ages. By the time Elizabeth I came to the throne the castle had fallen into a state of disrepair. The Queen gave the castle to Edward Watson, the son-in-law of Lord Chief Justice Montague, who restored it. During the Civil War the castle was damaged by the Parliamentarians but was later restored. Today the castle is still lived in by the descendents of Edward Watson.

Charles Dickens is said to have been a frequent visitor, and the castle is thought to be the Chesney Wold featured in Bleak House. On display visitors can see fine furniture, a collection of paintings and silver. Both the castle and the beautiful grounds are open to public view.

Rockingham lies surrounded by the fields and rich water-meadows of the lovely Welland valley, which itself is an intensely beautiful region full of scenic spots, picturesque villages and the spires of ancient churches. As such it offers the visitor tranquil lanes to wander, fishing from the Welland or Eyebrook Reservoir and the beautiful Rockingham Forest to roam in the foot-steps of English King's who once hunted fallow deer. Rockingham has a gentle ambience which makes it a perfect destination for a pleasant day out or a lovely restful weekend.
