About Whitfield

This is a picturesque village lying amongst sprawling open countryside criss crossed by dancing streams, tributaries of the River West Allen. It is a short distance from Hadrian's Wall and the beautiful Pennine Way.

The village is the home of a beautiful parish church dedicated to The Holy Trinity. The church is in the Early English style and is rich in stone, wood, glass and wrought iron. It offers visitors a peaceful fascinating visit, showing many memorials to the Blackett-Ord family from the time they first occupied Whitfield Hall up to present times. It was money from this family that built the church.

The Holy Trinity sits within a tranquil churchyard surrounded by a stone wall enclosing neat rows of graves.

On an historic note - the manor of Whitfield was grated by William, King of Scotland to the priory of Hexham, it was thus held by a local family of the same name for an annual rent of sixteen shillings and four pence, it remained with this family for many generations until it was sold in 1692 to John Ord, a lawyer from Newcastle.
