About Clumber Country Park

The peaceful landscape of this delightful country park gives visitors lovely summer memories of time spent ambling around picturesque woodland, peering into a seemingly bottomless lake, enjoying the delights of Victorian glasshouses and of strolling in a pretty Walled garden.

Clumber Country Park is the former home of the Dukes of Newcastle who landscaped the area. It occupies 3,800 acres which enclose parts of Sherwood Forest, a 90 acre lake, camping and picnic facilities. There is also the opportunity to enjoy a game of cricket, or hire a bicycle to follow one of the cycle trails through the park.

In the grounds there is a preserved Gothic Revival chapel dedicated to St.Mary the Virgin, a lovely place to tarry spending a few quiet moments of reflection. There is also the opportunity for a spot of fishing, and you may horse ride through the park by prior arrangement. There is an unforgettable 3 mile avenue of Lime trees planted by the 5th Duke of Newcastle in the 19th century, pleasure grounds, a conservation centre, shop, cafe and restaurant. In fact there is everything here, including a Caravan park, which goes to making the perfect country weekend, or a refreshing and rewarding day out for all the family.

Historically, Clumber Park surrounded Clumber House, a beautiful country house and seat of the Dukes of Newcastle from early in the 18th century. Some of the historic parkland is the work of Capability Brown, but sadly, the house which was set beside the lake was demolished in the late 1930's. Parts of the estate remain largely unaltered, such as the Walled Kitchen Garden, Glasshouses, and the outstanding Gothic Revival Chapel.

The park is in the care of the National Trust - it is open all the year round.
