About Appleton

Appleton is a village in Oxfordshire, some 4 miles northwest of the historic market town of Abingdon. It was once part of the county of Berkshire until the 1974 boundary change, which saw it become an Oxfordshire village.

The name Appleton simply means "an orchard". In the 10th century it was Appeltun. The name evolved between then and the 17th century as Apletone, Apletune, and being recorded in 1316 as Aspelton.
It is recorded in the Doomsday book of 1086 as having the most valuable fishery in Berkshire, valued at £1.4s.2d.

Appleton Manor House dates from around 1174. It has an ornate doorway, and a porch and fireplace that were added in Tudor times. The manor os a Grade II listed building.

The parish church of Saint Laurence dates to the 12th century and is also a Grade II listed building.
