About Culham

Culham is a village and civil parish in a bend of the River Thames, 1 mile south of Abingdon in Oxfordshire. Culham Bridge was built 1416-22 by the Abingdon Guild of the Holy Cross, to carry the road between Abingdon and Dorchester. It is the location of a skirmish in 1645 between Royalist forces and Parliamentarian forces during the English Civil War. The skirmish became known as the Battle of Culham Bridge, and ended in a Parliamentarian victory, with the Royalist commander Sir Henry Gage getting mortally wounded.
