A picture of Oxford
Carfax and Carfax Tower
The centre of life since Saxon times, Oxford's busy crossroads is named Carfax from the latin word quadrifurcus, which means four ways. The most prominent building at Carfax is the 14th century tower of St Martin's Church which has a clock and ornate quarterboys in Roman military uniform which strike every quarter of the hour. The quarterboys are exact replicas of originals that are looked after in the Museum of Oxford. Carfax Tower is another great place for visitors to witness the magnificent views of Oxford's famous skyline of dreaming spires.
