A picture of Oxford
Magdalen Bridge
Magdalen College ( pronounced Maudlin) was founded in 1458 by Bishop Waynflete on the site of the 13th century Hospital of St John, of which some is incorporated into the existing college. The college stands in grounds next to the slow moving River Cherwell, at the ancient crossing place of Magdalen Bridge. Around the college are grounds that are open to exploration by visitors in the afternoon. It is a beautiful place to take a relaxing walk along the peaceful leafy pathways and along the riverbank, where you can even enjoy a ride in a punt, either self-poled, or chauffeured. Next to the river is the wonderful Botanic Garden which was founded in 1621 and is another beautiful scenic place to relax, also giving access to the river.
