About Stratton Audley

Stratton Audley is a picturesque village about 2.5 miles (4 km) northeast of Bicester in Oxfordshire, England.

Mentioned in the Doomsday book of 1086 as Stratton, the village takes its full name from Stratone (street) and with Audley being added in the 13th century after the Audley family became tenants of the manor there from 1244.

The Audley family built a moated castle by 1263, which did not survive, however its remains were excavated in 1870, and the low earthworks can be seen in a field south-east of the church today. The parish church is the Church of St. Mary and St. Edburga, and dates from the 12th century.
